Economics Essay - Global Economic Risks and Opportunities of 2013
Economic growth: There are still significant downside risks from the European financial crisis and from U.S. fiscal policy. Will the U.S. economy grow? Or will there be another recession?
The US economy is very tightly tied to that of China and Europe. If China were to lower its interest rates, then it would create a price shift that would push up inflation on a massive scale across the globe. First World countries such as America are already being blamed for worldwide inflation thanks to its low interest rates. In Europe, if Germany were to suffer a financial crisis then the whole of Europe would begin to look shaky. The knock-on effect would ramp up American inflation to the point where Americans would have to lower their standard of living in order to survive.
But, being tied into the global economy is not the biggest risk to US growth. The three major concerns are oil prices, housing prices and the mess that the banks have made of the worldwide economy. The debt black hole is still massive around the world, but is the biggest in America, which still owes 16 trillion dollars in debt. Most of the debt is owed to China, with states such as Detroit looking to default.
With such a troubling economic tightrope in America, they should actually be looking to Europe to keep their money coming in. The Europeans have a similar culture to the Americans when compared to the rest of the world, and are therefore some of America’s biggest consumer groups in Europe. The sound fiscal planning of the Obama presidency has set things on a more even level, and America is beginning to become more economically stable. However, in the long term the Chinese cannot keep such low prices up forever, so many First World countries are either going to have to set up shop in China, or unite their business with Chinese products. As for Europe, America is going to have to hope that German industry can keep powering European success until the struggling countries can get back on their feet.
