Introduction

Canadian R&B songwriter, singer and actor, Justin Drew Bieber was born on March 1, 1994. In 2008, Bieber was discovered in Youtube by Scooter Braun and who sooner became his manager. Braun brought Bieber in Atlanta in order to meet Usher, and Bieber was later signed to Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG), a combined project between Usher and Braun. The first recording contract was proposed by L. A. Reid. Bieber's songs became popular all over the world, as a matter of fact; because his songs have been chosen by people, he became the only artist who has seven popular songs from a debut album table on the Billboard Hot100 (Current Billboard Top 10, 2011). The purpose of this paper is to discuss tackles poetic techniques used in Bieber's famous and popular song "Never say Never," which include simile, hyperbole and repetition.

Body - Poetic Techniques

Similes are applied throughout the song "Never Say Never" in order to give genuine life examples of individuals never giving up. One of the examples of simile used in the lyrics of the song is "Like Kobe in the fourth, ice water with blood." This explains that in order to become successful in life, a person must have to face all the consequences of reality, through the example given with regards to Kobe Bryant playing a tiring and difficult basketball game. In addition, a person who keeps on trying despite of many failures and mistakes in life will soon reach his goal in life just like Kobe Bryant who is now a famous basketball player. Another simile used in the song is "Like Luke with force if push comes to shove." This demonstrates that a person who does not know how to give up will become successful like what Luke Skywalker the character in Star Wars did. Bieber put several simile in the song "Never Say Never" in order to give inspiration that a dream may become reality if a person learn how to face and fight the challenges in life.

Hyperbole is also evident in the song. One of the hyperbole used is "And I am fast enough to run across the sea." At this line, Bieber is seen to strengthen his speed and able to jog on water in order to explain that nothing is impossible if a person is determined to obtain his goal in life. Another hyperbole used in the song is "So now I got the world in my hand." This demonstrates the feeling of happiness after a person reached his dreams. Hyperbole has been used in the song "Never Say Never" to render lesson with regards to the significance of never giving up despite trials and sufferings.

Repetition of words are also used in the song, like "Pick it up, pick it up." This explains that in every failure in life, a person always have several chances to try and rebuild his dreams again. Another example of repetition is "Never say never, never say never, and never say never." This explains that in every dream, a person must never give up on his dreams. Repetitions of words used in "Never Say Never" are applied in order to create or develop an imagery style.
